2-HOUR TOOTH SURGERY + TIPS FOR OWNERS

3-year-old Keiji has been under foster care recently as adoptions have temporarily ceased due to the circuit breaker. His fosterers spotted his teeth chattering. They sent videos to our SPCA vet who confirmed he had a painful fractured tooth with pulpits (endodontic disease).

🦷 Endodontic disease is often caused by bacterial infection or dental trauma. Trauma can be caused by accidental hits, chewing on hard items, or rough play. Pulpitis is the inflammation of the tooth pulp (inner part of the tooth made up of blood vessels, nerve endings, lymphatics, connective tissues).

👩🏻⚕️ The team underwent a gruelling 2-hour surgery to carefully remove the whole root of the canine tooth — the canine is the largest tooth in a dog’s mouth and difficult to remove! Canine tooth extractions also come with a risk of complications e.g. breaking of the jaw bone.

🤢Many of us know the inconvenience and agony that a toothache can bring (shoutout to those who’ve already had their wisdom teeth extracted and good luck to those who haven’t! 🤣), so we can imagine what Keiji went through.

💙Keiji is now doing well, placed on a soft diet, and back at home with loving fosterers.
