Adversity comes with instruction in its hand, and the authorities in Shenzhen, China, have taken that instruction, being the first municipality in China to officially ban the slaughter and sale of cats, dogs and wildlife for meat.

And, although it may have taken something as extreme as the coronavirus pandemic to prompt this latest move, it offers hope that other cities, provinces and countries will follow suit.

While we all come to terms with life under the cloud that is covid-19, we should enjoy, when we can, the benefits that adversity can bring, and the opportunity it provides us to reflect and make changes. Every negative situation has the potential to result in something positive or beneficial. Shenzhen has just proved this.

Soi Dog Foundation battled from 2011 to 2014 to successfully bring about a ban on the dog meat trade in Thailand and is currently focusing efforts to encourage a similar ban in Hanoi, Vietnam. We have been imploring Hanoi, Vietnam to follow suit and urge countries who still view the brutal nature of their slaughter, and the consumption of their meat, as normal, to think again.

Despite the Formula 1 inaugural Grand Prix being cancelled in Hanoi due to the global health crisis, the killing and consumption of thousands of dogs and cats continues there unabated. This news from Shenzhen shows us what can happen when we come together to bring about change.
