Soi Dog Foundation Late Co-Founder, Gill Dalley Wa..

As we celebrate and look back on the life of our late co-founder Gill Dalley, we cannot forget the day she was named Asian of the Year by Channel NewsAsia back in 2008. In a landmark move, this was the first time the award was presented to a non-Asian.

“Never in a million years” did Gill think she’d be recognised for this award, she said at the time. “I am just Gill, and all I wanted to do since I lost my legs was get my life back and continue with Soi Dog Foundation to help the dogs and cats of Phuket.”

Gill went on to win the inaugural Canine Hero of the Year at the Animals Asia conference in 2011 for her outstanding work towards alleviating the suffering of Asia’s street dogs. She donated the $10,000 prize money back to Soi Dog Foundation to help buy the current land the Phuket sanctuary is built upon.

In the same year Gill and John both were awarded the Jean Marchig award for their services to animal welfare and in 2017 they were both presented with Humane Society International’s Lifetime achievement award.

Whilst Soi Dog Foundation’s co-founders didn’t take on the task of saving Asia’s dogs and cats in the hope of winning awards, these milestones will forever be remembered and feel particularly poignant as we approach three years since Gill’s passing.

Everything Gill and Soi Dog Foundation accomplished over the years has been thanks to kind and generous supporters around the world who donate, volunteer, adopt and stand up for those who have no one else. Gill is not here today to see these achievements, but there’s no doubt that they were inspired by the legacy she left behind, a legacy that will live on forever.
