Building A Strong Bond With Your Cat

Often, we hear non-cat parents saying that dogs are definitely more affectionate than cats and that cats are aloof. Some even accuse cats of being “selfish” and uncaring.

I grew up with dogs all my life and only touched a kitten (or cat) for the first time in my life 13+ years ago when I rescued Cow, Bunny and Pole from the roadside as newborns. This was when Bobby and Mac (our pet dogs) were both 10 years old.

After that, destiny decided that I’d be a “crazy cat woman” because my encounters from then on were mostly with cats. Except for a short period of fostering Selphie, a mother-dog and her nine puppies (rescued from the pound), Angie and Jolie (rescues) and rescuing Yoshee, all my encounters had been with cats and kittens.

So are cats aloof?

After 13+ years of living with them (and being a slave to them!!)….

A resounding and definite “NO!”!

They are very sensitive (maybe even more than dogs) and affectionate too, but you have to be a bit more perceptive to detect it – that is all. And they are also very grateful. I know this for a fact, especially after nursing Rosie, Tiger, Vincent and Zurik. They will do their very best to make you happy. Zurik, especially….was exceptionally special and I’d say, the most considerate cat EVER.

Here’s a great article on how to bond with your cat: http://savingcatsdogsandcash.com/building-a-strong-bond-with-your-cat/

I love the part that says to use “attention” as a treat.

Unless we’re busy making dinner or on our way out the door, we never ignore the cats.  When Will comes home from work, he stops and pets or picks up all the cats before he sits down to relax.  With such a lovable, funny bunch, it’s honestly just instinct to want to pet or hold them.

I’ve never used treats or any other thing but love and attention to make the cats want to be near me.  And to clarify, these are not even necessarily cuddly cats.   Actually, I’ve found that there is really no connection between the cuddly factor and the obedience factor.

Happy bonding with your cat!!
