Xavier Hails Highest Fine Slapped On Two Vietnam P..

“Hardly a month after the arrests of two Vietnamese poachers during PERHILITAN’s Special Protected Area Response Team (SPARTA) operations, we are seeing the biggest ever fine imposed on wildlife crime at an impressive RM 1.56 million and two years of imprisonment each.
This news is indeed encouraging as we also know that the Kementerian Air, Tanah dan Sumber Asli minister, Dr Xavier Jayakumar intends to increase the existing fines under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 to at least RM 1 million from the existing maximum fine amount of RM500,000.
While this is a welcomed change, as with this case, we also hope that all future wildlife crime cases will have sentences meted out promptly and accordingly, so it may serve as a deterrent and a strong message to perpetrators across the region. The government’s commitment to protecting wildlife seems to be encouraging as we see action being taken to address poaching in particular.
We hope efforts will be heightened to increase intelligence gathering with Jabatan PERHILITAN Semenanjung Malaysia, Polis Diraja Malaysia ( Royal Malaysia Police ), INTERPOL HQ, to break the illegal wildlife trade that is threatening our wildlife, particularly the Malayan tiger.”
