From 7 Puppies To Only 6 Now

Ref:http://myanimalcare.org/2012/04/22/what-went-wrong-for-the-7-puppies-and-their-mother/

I was informed last night that one puppy had passed on while being on drips at the clinic.

Apparently, it is not parvovirus but distemper that had afflicted the entire family.

The incubation period for distemper is known to be between 3-21 days but most websites put it as 7-21 days.

The puppies are already 4 months old, according to the caregiver, and they had been breastfed by their mother while the whole family lived in the shelter. The mother has not been vaccinated since the whole family was dumped at the shelter gates.

The caregiver thought it is now time to vaccinate the puppies, and had applied for subsidy, which we approved.

She brought the puppies to the clinic, they were vaccinated and the very next day, 5 out of 7 came down with diarrhoea and vomiting. The mother who used to be fit and healthy, also came down with the same symptoms. Note: the mother was not vaccinated at the clinic, only the puppies were.

The caregiver insists that the puppies were infected at the clinic, but incubation period for the distemper virus is 3-21 days. These puppies came down on the very next day, in fact, less than 12 hours since they were vaccinated in the evening.

My untrained mind suspects the puppies and the mother, being strays, already had the distemper virus dormant in them, and the vaccination brought the puppies’ immunity down, hence, the disease manifested. It spread to the mother as well. Only the two strongest puppies have been unaffected.

But the caregiver insists the puppies contracted the disease at the clinic.

Now, the infected puppies are on drips and the caregiver wants to apply for subsidy, which we have approved.

She and her friend will be bringing one more sick puppy and the mother-dog in for treatment this morning.

As this case is from another state, the above is only what is reported to me. As a medical fund, we are only here to help with subsidies to save the lives of animals. We have never given any veterinary advice as we are not qualified to do so. It has always been our practice to urge caregivers to seek the advice of vets for the best treatment for their animals.

We hope the puppies and the mother will survive this ordeal.
