Have you heard the good news? Thanks to public donations, WWF-Australia was able to successfully raise enough money to buy and retire the last commercial gill net still operating full time in Far North Queensland. Gillnet fishing is nonselective which means they often catch species other than those being targeted.
In fact, the net is already out of the water and no longer threatening precious marine life such as dugongs, snubfin dolphins, marine turtles, sawfish, hammerhead sharks and the critically endangered Bizant River shark.
Thank you to everyone who donated and helped make a net-free haven for dugongs. Together, we made a difference. #NetFreeNorth
We raised enough money to buy the last full-time commercial gill net on the northern Great Barrier Reef!
Now, it’s time to celebrate by taking a dive to discover the amazing marine life that lurks beneath the reef: https://bit.ly/2I4bgtt.
