ILLEGAL SALE OF SOFT-SHELLED TURTLES AS PETS

Based on a tip-off on alleged sale of soft-shelled turtles as pets at a farm in Pasir Ris, ACRES ACIU (Animal Crime Investigation Unit) investigated further, and found about 14 juvenile soft-shelled turtles for sale at $6 each. The information was handed over to the AVA for enforcement action, and the animals were confiscated.

ACRES would like to thank the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) for their enforcement action.

Unfortunately, some species of soft-shelled turtles are legally sold alive for the meat trade in Singapore. However, they are not allowed to be sold or kept as pets in Singapore. This offers a loophole resulting in continued exploitation of these animals for both meat and illicit pet trade. We also urge public not to buy them and/or release them in our waters, not only because it is illegal or bad for their welfare, but buying these animals only feeds the demand to sell more.
