MERCY RELEASES HARM ANIMALS AND THE ECOSYSTEM
Vesak Day in Singapore is a holy day celebrated by Buddhists. As the day approaches, we would like to caution against the act of mercy release.
Mercy release is an ancient ritual in which people free captive animals to generate positive karma through an act of kindness. A tradition that once encouraged the spontaneous release of doomed animals, unfortunately, has today become a commercial enterprise, in which people buy animals specifically to release them. This process may injure or even kill the animals and destroy our ecosystem.
This practice has created a thriving industry for those who trap, trade and sell wild animals for release, taking advantage of peoples empathy for animals. Captured animals may die during trapping or after release because they have been injured or set loose in unsuitable habitats. The release of alien species into the environment can wreak havoc on our ecosystems.
So instead of releasing animals, consider other ways you can help improve the lives of animals. Here are 10 ways you can help – https://www.facebook.com/spcasingapore/photos/a.283797778154.142068.262947298154/10154357834743155/?type=3&theater
