Pet Businesses Will Soon Have To License Dogs Before Sale: AVA

 


NEW DOG LICENSING RULES – HOME BREEDING LOOPHOLE REMAINS

On average, 200 pet dogs a year are left at the SPCA unclaimed by their owners, after the dogs were found wandering the streets. Many of these dogs have microchips that are not registered in AVA’s system.

The new licensing requirements, introduced by AVA, will strengthen the traceability of dogs in Singapore, and is a good step forward. For the new rules to be truly effective, the authorities will need to prevent unscrupulous breeders from skirting the requirements, by putting in place a rigorous system matched with effective enforcement.

However, an area of concern with the licensing rules are home breeders, who are currently unregulated and who continue to remain a loophole in the current system.
