MEET OUR NATIVE WILDLIFE: WHATS THAT FLUFF?!
This week well be sharing some facts about the plantain squirrel (Callosciurus notatus).
Plantain squirrels are the most common native squirrels in Singapore. They can also be found in Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and Thailand.
They are diurnal and are most active in the early morning and late afternoon when its not too hot. They are commonly seen in trees and rarely come to the ground. They make their nests out of leaves and twigs in hollow trees. They are usually spotted alone or in small groups.
Plantain Squirrel are omnivores, eating a range of foods including fruits, nuts and seeds, nectar, insects and eggs. Their main role in ecology is to disperse tree seeds, and they play a further important role in ecosystems because they are a prey species for many predators.
Did you know that plantain squirrels communicate by moving their tails and making chatter and chirping sounds? In some cases, these squirrels also make shrill cries in response to the presence of a predator. Listen out for them the next time you visit any green spaces in Singapore!
