IN HONOR OF NELSON – LETTER FROM AN ADOPTER
Our adopters around the world have helped to change the world for thousands of animals rescued from suffering. We would like to share the beautiful message we recently received from Kayti, adopter of Nelson. Thank you Kayti for showing this boy what true love is and thank you for your support of all the animals in our care:
“Summer of 2003, I started sending letters to consulates around the world to bring awareness to the plight of the conditions of the dogs in Thailand. Around then, I volunteered to foster a pup looking for a forever home in the US. Soi Dog wrote me back and asked if “Nelson” would be good.
I reluctantly agreed because I had wanted a girl, but figured he would find his forever home soon and I could foster another. Well a few weeks later, I went to the airport to meet a scrawny, long legged, exhausted, confused pup and brought him home. I tried not to get too attached as I knew his stay with me would be temporary.
Alas, the days passed, potential adopters came to the house, but I found fault with all of them and didn’t agree to adopt Nelson to any of them. A couple of weeks later it had dawned on me, that, despite my best efforts, this little wiggle worm had made his way quickly into my heart and he wasn’t going to let go. I then emailed Soi Dog to ask if I could be considered for a permanent home for Nelson.
Soi Dog immediately and enthusiastically responded with a “YES”. As the years passed, I went on to veterinary school in Scotland because I wanted to help more animals like Nelson, those in need and without a voice.
We went on many adventures together and travelled all over New England. Coming from Thailand, Nelson hadn’t experienced snow before. During our first snowfall of the year, I brought Nelson outside. He cautiously made his way out into the yard, gingerly placing each foot in the snow. When he made it about 10 feet from the door, he sat down, lifted all 4 paws in the air and started SCREAMING! I had to run out and grab him and warm him up.
He eventually got used to the snow (good thing because we had over 8 feet the winter before last). He was an ambassador! He touched the lives of so many people who met him. Some who got to know his story and some who didn’t. Regardless of the history, there was something about him that just drew people in. But he didn’t ever touch anyone’s life quite the way he did mine. He was my protector, my confidant, my best friend.
Sadly, two weeks ago, he woke me up in the middle of the night with a yelp. He was in the middle of a tonic clonic seizure, the first of many over the next 24 hours. The hardest decision I ever had to make was to release him of his pain and suffering.
I had to say goodbye to my partner in crime of 12˝ years. I know it will get easier, but the tears still flow every day and night, even as I write this. Please accept my donation in Nelson’s name and in honor of all the great things you do. He was so very loved.”
