Vincents maintenance Plan

Everything’s been fine with Vincent since his surgery. Apart from the 5 days of sneezing (it has stopped now), he’s as well as can be and is totally back to his old ways. This includes sentry duty at the gate and being “super-manja” to all visitors. His confidence is also back, 100%. Ginger is back to bullying him, unfortunately, but that’s how it is with cats and we humans cannot much about it.

When Vincent was sneezing, it didn’t seem serious enough to warrant a trip to the vet’s, so I gave him Vetri DMG and that took care of it.

I’m totally aware that there is no cure for gum problems, only maintenance. So Vincent’s maintenance plan is as follows:

Please note that this is only a sharing. Kindly consult your veterinarian for your pet’s needs.

Fish oil, once a day.

Curcumin once a day. Half a capsule.

Curcumin is the active ingredient in kunyit (turmeric). Many people know the health benefits of taking curcumin, but the trick is to make the curcumin in kunyit bio-available. This company seems to have successfully extracted the curcumin out of the kunyit!

With all the forms available, what type of turmeric or curcumin should you pick for your pet?

Most curcumin studies involve the use of the active ingredient itself, and not turmeric. So giving your pet turmeric, even the organic variety, isn’t likely to make much of a difference.

In other words, curcumin is not easily absorbed into your pet’s blood. And because of that, much just passes through the body unabsorbed and gets eliminated. Further, the liver may quickly metabolize even the small amount that does get absorbed.

To compensate for these shortcomings, some vets advise making an emulsion by mixing curcumin with fats or lecithin to make it more absorbable.

I give the curcumin powder (from the capsule) together with the fish oil.

Please consult your veterinarian before giving your pet any new foods or supplements. I do the same too. Every pet’s needs is different.
