BABY BIRDS: WHEN DO THEY NEED RESCUE?

We receive a number of calls from concerned members of public of fallen baby birds or their nest and it is definitely heart-warming to note our societys empathy for these helpless-looking birds.

Many a times, young birds leave the nest as fledglings (pictures on the right). Fledglings closely resemble adults and are able to make short flights. The adults are often within view, guiding these fledglings as they learn to fly and forage. It is an important stage, and the fledgling needs to stay with the parents to have the best possible future in the wild. If you spot adults around, please leave them alone.

Should you find a chick who has fallen out of a nest, try to locate the nest (if not accompanied by the chick), or the parents (likely flying overhead around you- sometimes frantically). You can help the chick by placing the nestling back into the nest (but keep the handling to a minimum) and keeping the nest high above the ground and away from direct sun or rain.

If the nest is fallen with the chicks or eggs, please place back the nest or with reinforcement.

If you have doubts during any of the above circumstances, please call us immediately and we will be able to advise you further. We may request you to send a photo of the chick and if possible, the nest. But most importantly, please do not bring the chick to a different location. Rescuing and caring for in captivity is not a responsible option when the chick still has a chance to be reunited with his/her parents.

Should there be obvious injuries/open wounds, please call us straight away.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Thanks to the various callers for sharing their photos that came handy for this post!
