EX-BATTERY HENS EXPERIENCE THEIR FIRST MOMENTS OF FREEDOM

Sadly, chickens are among the animals most abused at the hands of humans. In many parts of the world, including Asia, hens who are farmed to supply eggs for human consumption are commonly confined in tiny “battery cages” that cause immense suffering. The cages are so cramped that hens are not able to perform important natural behaviours. Often, then hens can’t even stretch their wings. Each hen may live in a space equivalent to an A4-sized piece of paper- for their entire lives. Imagine that.

We know that chickens are intelligent and social animals. Their basic needs include walking, perching, flying, taking dust baths, nesting and basking in the sun. They cannot do any of these things in a battery cage.

The good news is that you can help to end this suffering. You can help by choosing “cage-free” or “free-range” eggs. Many supermarkets in Singapore stock such eggs. If your local supermarket doesn’t, then why not ask them to? When dining out, ask where the eggs come from, and tell businesses that you would prefer to purchase meals made only with cage-free or free-range eggs. Consumer pressure is a powerful tool for change.

You can also use many alternatives to eggs in your cooking and baking. Search online for lots of ideas!

Watch the first moments of freedom of these hens rescued from battery cages, after the farmer had a change of heart.
