THE LITTLE BOY WHO SO NEARLY LOST AN EYE

Woodpecker is about 3 years of age and arrived at our shelter after a lady found him with a horrendous wound to his left eye. It was filled with maggots and bleeding profusely. Woodpecker whimpered constantly with the pain.

The lady managed to get him into her car and to our shelter. Woodpecker was terrified and in a great deal of pain. He had to be mildly sedated in order for the vets to get to work on his severely damaged eye. The question on everyone’s mind was whether this poor boy had lost his sight in that eye.

One by one, those maggots were extracted from the wound and the swollen and infected tissue gently cleaned. It was then a question of waiting to see how Woodpecker would recover. Having initially refused to eat, by day two at our shelter, his appetite had returned and he was visibly happier.

The wound started to heal well as healthy tissue returned around the eye and the inflammation calmed down with each passing day. When Woodpecker regained his ability to blink with the damaged eyelid, we knew he had turned a corner, and it simply made our day when the vet confirmed he still had vision in the eye.

Miracles like Woodpecker’s simply cannot happen without people like you. There is no other source of funding for the medical treatment these animals desperately need. Please don’t think you need to donate a lot to make a difference.

A small, regular gift from you will be life-saving for thousands of dogs and cats every year. These animals have nobody else to turn to – YOU are their only hope.
