SPCA, EMAS and Traffic Police jointly rescue a dog in distress from the PIE
In early October 2015, we were alerted to a dog sighted on the central divider of the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) near Corporation Road, at about noon.
SPCA’s rescuer, YaoHuang, promptly arrived on the scene to find the dog, a Cross-German Shepherd with a suspected leg injury, scurrying across the divider to the road leading towards Tuas. As we would have to cordon off the relevant part of the expressway from oncoming vehicles in both directions, SPCA sought the help of the EMAS and Traffic Police (TP). EMAS officers, Bala and Aye, helped to stop the traffic heading in one direction, whilst the TP’s Staff Sergeant Syed Zayid did so for the other direction, which went on for about fifteen minutes.
A kind motorist at the scene, Mr Leow, stopped his vehicle to render assistance, and proceeded with YaoHuang to rescue the dog, and in about ten minutes managed to get close enough to it. A catchpole then had to be relied upon to secure the canine, as it was hiding in the bushes and could not be approached safely. As Mr Leow held on to the dog with the catchpole, YaoHuang quickly retrieved SPCA’s rescue van, to place the dog safely within a carrier on board.
Although the dog, a black/tan male, was clearly shaken, he was found to be generally alright and brought to SPCA’s shelter for veterinary care and treatment. As he is microchipped but not registered, we placed an advertisement in the Straits Times’ Classifieds section to locate his owner, but to no avail.
(We are grateful to the EMAS and Traffic Police for their kind and valuable assistance in this rescue, and have written to both parties to express our gratitude; special thanks also go out to Mr Leow whose help has been crucial to the success of the rescue.)
The dog (pictured here) is presently recovering from his leg injury, in our care. We’ve named him KING, and will be putting him up for adoption in a few weeks!
If you’re ready for the lifelong commitment, and are keen on giving King a forever home, please contact our Shelter Supervisor on 6287 5355 ext 32, during office hours.
(Do note that additional conditions have to be fulfilled in acquiring, as a pet, a German Shepherd, classified as a “Part II Scheduled Dog”, as per the authorities’ stipulations:
