[BREAKING NEWS] Penang Dog Culling Stopped!
GEORGE TOWN, Oct 9, 2015 (The Rakyat Post): The Penang state government will stop culling dogs following the lifting of the Rabies-infected Area (Penang) Order 2015 as Penang is now declared rabies free.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng made the announcement today following advice from the State Health Department and State Veterinary Services Department that there had not been new cases in over two weeks.
However, Lim said that the vaccination order still remained, making it compulsory for dog owners to have their dogs vaccinated.
“There have been no new cases of rabid dogs in Penang in the state since Sept 21 and I’ve been told that we have enough stocks of vaccine.
“Since the situation is under control, we have decided to revoke the (culling) order since Penang is rabies free,” he told a Press conference at his office in Komtar here today.
Lim and the state government came under fire from animal rights groups and NGOs when he ordered for the culling of dogs in Penang on Sept 15 after the first case of rabies was detected.
Animal lovers have been crying foul since then following the culling of some 2,000 stray dogs in Penang.
“I hope this will put to rest all the criticism and accusations against me that I eat dogs.
“What we did was for the safety of the public and that is our main priority,” added Lim
Since Sept 14, Penang has seen four cases of rabid dogs and three dog bite cases, though no human beings have been infected with the disease.
