DURIAN IS DOING WELL AND GROWING BIGGER AND BIGGER!
A few months ago, we rescued our first alligator snapping turtle, named Durian. He was unwell and inactive at first, refusing to eat at all. We decided to give him some time to settle in to see if his appetite improved on its own before intervention, as very often turtles in a new environment will not eat for some time.
Were glad to report that Durian is now doing so much better! He is more active now, and eats lots! He is rapidly increasing in size. Alligator snapping turtles are native to North America and can grow larger then their relatives, the common snapping turtle.
Sadly, alligator snapping turtles are a threatened species. This is because they are poached for both the pet trade and for meat. Their habitats also face destruction. Poor Durian could well have started his life free in the wild, before being captured as a result of the demand for exotic turtles as pets.
For now, we are keeping an eye on Durian to ensure he remains well, while we make future plans for how we will potentially house him as these turtles can grow huge. They are one of the largest freshwater turtle species.
