A Very Interesting Letter To A Mayor

Koo shared this: http://www.examiner.com/article/animal-activist-twins-shane-and-sia-barbi-among-those-to-defend-elkton-cats

An excerpt:

Mayor Alt is under the incorrect impression that he should yield to the demands of residents who want the cats removed from their neighborhoods, the cat problem won’t be solved.

Alt doesn’t realize there are many more disadvantages to removing the cats than in implementing a TNR program for his town, including more cats who will show up to take their place within a few weeks. Trapping feral cats and moving them to another place or killing them only means more will come to take their place.

And here’s what I love best:

Anyone savvy to the rescue world, especially the feral cat communities, knows the truth behind shelter adoptions, and realize that cats have a grim chance of adoption at the city shelters, and feral cats have less. All the no kill rescues are full in capacity and can’t take in every stray cat the city decides to pick up for “removal”.

Your animal loving citizens are tax payers and voters and demand a mayor to listen to their humane and economically sensible TNR solution, that most of your citizens would agree to.

There are two type of politicians, (mayors). There are that don’t work WITH their community. They would rather defend themselves with empty promises and “damage control” propaganda.

Then you have someone like history making, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti (much like Mayor John D’Amico), who listens to his voters. Mayor Garcetti worked with Christi of Stray Cat Alliance and honored her with a no kill award. Mayor Garcetti studied all the statistics and facts, that proved spay/neuter programs saved the tax payers a lot of money, whether you love animals or not, that’s important!

For every TAX dollar you spend on spay or neutering cats, you save $10 that you would spend on warehousing, killing and disposing.

Dr. Conrad, top nation vet included in this email, would agree that it’s a myth and false manipulation to insinuate that feral cats carry diseases that are transmitted to humans. HISTORY has proven that removing cats from an area actually causes serious diseases because of the rat/rodent infestation.

Removing cats also creates other homeless cats to replace them, creating a never ending population problem and wasted taxes. Ironically a small cat colony of spay/neutered cats keeps other wandering cats from entering that area.

Christi of Stray Cat Alliance, has worked on many bills and campaigns. Christi, Dr. Conrad and we all use our media pull to expose and oppose other politicians that were were NOT animal friendly, as in the case of Jerry Brown. Christi’s campaign (attached) against Jerry Brown repealing the Hayden’s law for shelter pets, was a landslide success, thanks to the press and celebrities that supported her campaigns.

You have a choice Mayor Alt, and you can choose to make history by proactively supporting your animal loving community with a TNR program. Politically speaking, this will also open up your demographics, supporters and voters like it did for hero Mayor Garcetti.

Thank you for this open conversation. If you have any questions about facts about TNR, rescues and shelter adoptions, diseases, best methods for pet population control, etc., all the experts are in this email thread so there is no more misinformation demonizing feral cats.

Sia, Shane Barbi and Ken Wahl’

P.S. We have tried in the past and yes, there are two types of politicians. We have been hitting a brick wall in the past, receiving lip service and empty promises, but yesterday, we got lucky.  So, it doesn’t hurt to try. At worst, we get nothing (and we will just continue doing what we do).
