“DEAD” OWL SURPRISES RESCUER & RETURNS TO FLIGHT

Rich Briere and his dog Baxter were returning home from the pet groomer when they saw “a squashed tangle of feathers” in the road. Rich quickly pulled his car over with the idea that he could at least give the deceased bird a proper burial. But instead, this Colraine, Massachusetts resident found a bird who was still very much alive.

“When first I came upon the owl smack in the center of the road I wasn’t really sure what it was,” Rich said. “It wasn’t until I turned him over, felt his heartbeat and saw his face that I fully understood the situation.”

Rich quickly called his brother to help him track down a wildlife specialist for help, but while Rich waited on the road side, another driver pulled over too. She began shouting at Rich about how the owl was going to maul him and possibly give him rabies.

“We quickly sent her and those like her on their way.” Rich said. “Then things began to move quickly and smoothly.”

It just so happened that Rich had put a box of cracked corn in his car that morning so that he could feed wild turkeys on a nearby mountain. The box made a perfect spot for the owl, now named Dwight, to rest during the ride to the veterinary hospital.

“The most amazing discovery I made was how light the owl was,” Rich explained. “It was like holding a dust mop with talons. Although bare-handed I never once worried that I’d be on the receiving end of those weapons. I simply kept them wrapped up tight against my chest, placed him in a box that I had in my car and away we went. Baxter, my dog, seemed to fully understand what was going on and not once did he make a sound.”

“It got very quiet in the box on several occasions and I was afraid of what we’d find when we finally made it to the South Deerfield Veterinary Clinic,,” Rich recalled. “But, alas, when we got into surgery and opened the box, there was Dwight….one eye looking up at us. After Dwight was worked on, it was time to place him in a cage, cover it, and let him rest. As I turned to go, he spun his head around and looked right through my soul…..his way of saying thanks, I’m sure. A week later he was back in the air.”

Ironically, a few nights after Dwight was released, Rich heard none other than a Barred owl hooting outside his bedroom window.

Animal Rescue Chase

The Great Animal Rescue Chase celebrates the art of animal rescue with a worldwide race to rescue one million. It’s a free event, open to all, and is perhaps the only global animal rescue event aimed at helping any animal in distress, anywhere in the world. Our ambition is to create a culture of enthusiasm and pride in animal activism. We believe in teaching, by example, that there is a hero in each of us just waiting to be unleashed. Empowered animal lovers can not only save lives, but build the momentum for powerful animal welfare reform.
