I was walking along the beach in Naples, Florida under a full moon at midnight when in the near distance I could hear a strange flapping sound. I moved toward the sound and came upon a stingray that was stranded on the beach, several feet from the water. The flapping sound came from her wings as she frantically attempted to get back to the water, but she was getting nowhere and the water was too far away.
The bright moonlight glistened off her as I approached her cautiously to avoid her stinger as she continued to flap desperately. But then she stopped suddenly when she saw me near, as if she somehow knew I could be trusted, and I knew she could be trusted as well. I believe in this moment, we both acknowledged that she needed me and that I was there to help her.
She remained very still, all the while looking into my eyes as I placed my hands under her wings and moved her toward the edge of the water. She was heavy and slippery but we worked together to get her to the ocean and when she reached it, she gracefully soared off into the night.
