Does your dog bark excessively or chew up everything they can get their teeth on when you’re not around? Or do they make a mess of the house when you’re not home? You’re the most important thing in your dog’s world, so it’s only natural that when you go out, your dog experiences some distress or anxiety. Punishment is never the answer. Why would you punish them for missing you too much?

But how do you stop the destructive behaviour?

- Provide plenty of fresh water and clean, warm bedding for them so they feel safe and comfortable when you are away.

- Give your dog plenty of exercise. Bring them for on leash walks or short jogs, and give them some obedience training to keep them stimulated. This ensures they get the exercise they need, and also means they’ll rest while you’re out, instead of tearing up the house.

- Provide them with appealing dog toys to keep them occupied. Kongs stuffed with dog treats are always a favourite (but remember, everything in moderation!). Hide some dog treats around the house. This will give them something to do while you’re away.

- Most importantly, never make a fuss as you’re leaving or returning. You’ll be inadvertently rewarding their bad behaviour by giving them an over the top greeting every time you leave or arrive home.

A mild case of separation anxiety in dogs can be easily fixed by taking these simple steps. More severe cases require lots of time, patience and commitment.
