Subject: Cat with sporo desperately needs help
To: chankahyein@gmail.com
Hi Dr Chan,
I need help with my cat his name is ping ping and he is a nice stray cat that I adopted 3 years ago. He has been infected with sporo and I have been caring for him for 4 months now but he doesnt seem to be getting better. Some days it seems like he is getting better but other days he doesn’t look like he has improved. I have spend more than RM1000 on vets and been caring for him for 4 months already and I work 6 days a week in restaurant so it’s getting more difficult for me. He needs better care. I also have a niece who was in ICU because of bacteria infection and doctor said it could be ping-ping’s infection that cause it. My family wants me to put it down but I really would like to treat him but I have little money and time to care for him. He is still under medicate, itraconazole and a antibiotic cream for his wounds. I just think he needs better care. I am willing to pay for his boarding and medical if there is a vet that can charge me a minimum fee. I really don’t want to euthanize him. Please get back to me asap. My niece will be back from hospital soon and I have only a few days to decide what to do with ping ping. Thank you
Regards,
Mark
We gave Mark the contact details of 3 vets whom we know take in sporo-cats. Mark called each one of them to enquire if they could take in Ping Ping. At the same time, we also got Mark in touch with two of our readers who have successfully home-nursed sporo-cats, Fenton and another reader who requested anonymity.
Mark got in touch with both readers and one of them provided him with the original Sporonox and Transfer Factor.

Hi Dr Chan,
Thank you for all the help you have given me. I have in fact spoken with the reader and she has given me a course of medication and some referrals too. I am so grateful for the help you have all shown. What I need to do now is treat ping ping on my own until my niece comes back. Then I will need to find a vet that will take him in (and that I can afford!) FYI one vet is already full and he can’t take ping ping in but I think I will speak to the other again to discuss his charges. He said he could lower his fees if I provide the medication so now that I have some meds let’s see what he will say. Thanks again Dr Chan.

Mark finally decided to board Ping Ping at the third of our recommended vets.

Hi Dr Chan,
Good news is the third vet has just taken Ping ping in. I know he will get better care there. I’m sorry to hear about more cats infected with sporo. Now that you have mentioned, I saw a stray cat 2 weeks ago with severe wounds that I now suspect is sporo. It’s anyone’s guess why it has been on the rise.
Thank you again for all your help. I really hope ping ping will recover. Unfortunately I did not take a picture of him. I will take some when I visit him next week.
Mark
And here’s today’s updates:

Subject: Ping PIng is recovering well!
To: Chan Kah Yein <chankahyein@gmail.com>
Hi Dr Chan,
I am so pleased to let you know that Ping Ping is getting a lot better. I went to visit him today and he looks really well. His wounds are healing fast. Even the largest wound is right now less than half the original size!
The vet said that he is responding well to the medication and should be able to return home within a month. I just had to let you two know about his progress. I’m so happy that with your help I am able to save him! I took some pictures and will share them soon.
Mark
We are really happy that Ping Ping is doing well and can go home in a month’s time. That is indeed wonderful news! We are also very happy that Mark did not give up even though he was under pressure from his family. Not everyone is able to home-nurse their pets (due to family or work constraints), so the other option is to find a vet who is willing to help out. This option isn’t any easier as one would have to part with one’s pet for a considerable length of time and also raise money for the cost of the treatment and boarding. Mark chose the latter because it suited his circumstances and the constraints that he faced. The point is, never to give up. Our pets depend on us and their wellbeing is our responsibility.
Kudos to you, Mark!
Get well soon, Ping Ping! We hope to see more photos of you too!
Meanwhile, Mark tells us that the vet (who is looking after Ping Ping) has many stray animals for adoption. If you would like to adopt any cat from this vet, please contact Mark at his email below:

Hi Dr Chan,
Of course! It would be great to share my story on your blog. I think I’ve learned a lot from treating Ping Ping and I also wish that his story will inspire other owners to not give up if their cat has sporo. I am quite ok if you mention my name. It has been a rough 5 months but the last few weeks have been very comforting knowing that he is recovering. This vet is such a great vet (and person) she has a big heart for animals and I wish there was something I could do to help her. She is currently housing 20 plus strays! Mostly were sick and were left outside her clinic and she doesn’t want to put them on the street. Her assistant has just resigned, so she is doing so much on her own. Perhaps you can blog about this and hopefully people who are looking to adopt cats will read it. She has so many beautiful cats available for adoption. Thanks Dr Chan.

Yes Dr Chan, I wouldnt mind at all being the contact person should anyone want to adopt a stray. I will be happy to help the vet. Thanks for all your help, I would have most likely put Ping Ping to sleep if you didn’t help me. Take care
Mark
