There is no worst moment (for us at least!) than when our dog breaks away from the leash. If youre there when it happens, its important to know what to do to boost the chances of your dog returning to your side. Our natural instinct is to chase after our dog, in hopes of catching him before he scoots off and disappears. However, running after him only makes him think that youre playing catch me if you can, making him run faster and further away from you! The panic and frustration in our voice also make him more reluctant to return to our side.

If your dog ever wanders away from you, get his attention by calling his name in a high-pitched voice. Keep coaxing him in that tone and persevere (dont let him disappear from your sight!) until he returns to you. When he does return, remember not to shout, holler or threaten him, but shower him with lots of love and cuddles to reward him for coming back to you. Hell soon learn that it pays to stay by your side!

While were on the topic of running, registrations are open for our Fun Run this year at MacRitchie Reservoir. Due to the presence of wildlife in the nature reserve, pets wont be allowed into the premises, but come get some exercise and support a good cause while youre at it!
