SDF is aware of posts on other pages attacking its sterilization operation at Khemmarat livestock center. Whilst we accept that a few Thai people because of religious beliefs are opposed to sterilization, which we respect, the “facts” being stated are not true.
SDF sterilized 570 dogs at the Khemmarat shelter to prevent a potential disaster there.
None of the dogs were sterilized and many females were in season and as happens bringing the others into season.
With no segregation dogs were freely mating. If nothing was done this would have led to potentially in the region of 3,000 puppies being born in the coming months.
Dogs at Khemmarat were dying according to the management at a rate of 10 per day. There were of course a significant number of dogs that were not well enough to undergo surgery and some nursing mothers. Although SDF would normally terminate pregnancies none were terminated at Khemmarat in accordance with the wishes of the local management.
In addition supporters of another group who were on site advised that all dogs adopted were their property and that the adopters did not want their dogs sterilizing. These were also left.
Most sterilizations were carried out by a very experienced private vet hired by SDF to carry out the operations, some were carried out by a vet brought in by the local Livestock manager.
The vet hired by Soi Dog is in daily contact with the management of the shelter who have advised that there have been NO post operative complications. Two dogs had outer suture layer open and these have been resutured.
However there are still dogs there suffering from distemper and other diseases and dogs continue to die as a result.
Whilst we accept that Thailand is a Buddhist country and some people are opposed to sterilization, SDF believes it is the only humane way to control the population of unwanted dogs. SDF sees cases every week of unwanted puppies discarded on roadsides, and in temples and jungles, rather than have the mothers sterilized. Many more cases of course we do not see and inevitably these puppies die of starvation and disease.
The latest group of dogs at Nakhom Phanom were at first refused permission to go there. (Last month 250 dogs died still in their cages in a police compound from dehydration after a similar refusal which we found out about too late). Animals Activist Alliance, Thailand after getting guarantee from SDF that we would cover the costs of these dogs negotiated for them to go to Nakhon Phanom.
SDF have arranged delivery of an initial 7 tons of dog food, approved purchase of several tons of rice locally, and large quantities of medicines and vaccines etc., are being shipped there.
It is likely that at least 500 of the dogs will be shipped to Khemmarat in a few weeks but SDF have requested they remain at NP until they have completed full course of vaccinations, on the basis we will cover the costs.
To give 1300 dogs a full course of vaccines will cost in the region of 400,000 thb alone.
The dogs who were being housed at the Buriram shelter have gone. Originally we were told they had died or run away but volunteers have found them in horrendous condition in a livestock center in Kanchanaburi province. These volunteers have no funds to help them and SDF has already guaranteed all costs for these dogs as well.
