On 21 September, the SPCA received a call about a cat kept in a cage on a first-floor balcony. A concerned passerby, who had suspected neglect, captured video evidence when a window was left open. Our Inspector headed down to the address provided and found an emaciated cat living in filthy conditions. The owner admitted to long working hours, leaving the cat uncared for. Our Inspector advised the owner on responsible pet ownership, but ultimately the owner surrendered the cat to the SPCA.
The cat was immediately taken to a 24/7 veterinary clinic for emergency treatment before returning to the SPCA. Upon further assessment by our clinic’s vet, it was found that she was a senior cat who had hardly any teeth left. Our vet also had to shave her down due to her extremely matted fur. Unfortunately, the cat passed away shortly after. The case has been escalated to the authorities for their follow-up action.
🔍 Spotting signs of neglect:
- Animals consistently kept in small spaces (e.g. cages) without room to move
- Poor living conditions like dirty, cluttered, or unhygienic environments
- Untended physical medical issues like wounds, matted fur, or extreme thinness
- Lack of access to food, water, or shelter
🚨 If you suspect neglect, avoid direct confrontation. Instead, let the SPCA inspectors handle the case safely after you have done the following:
- Document evidence if possible, such as photos or videos
- Report the situation to the SPCA or relevant authorities
