Malayan Tigers Once Numbered 3,000 In The 1950s. T..

Malayan tigers once numbered 3,000 in the 1950s. Today, fewer than 150 individuals remain due largely to the biggest threat to our tigers – poaching.

Prior to 2016 there were only 3 teams (15 rangers). Urgent action was required to address the poaching threat. In mid-2018, WWF-Malaysia launched Project Stampede to flood the forest area with patrol teams comprising local Orang Asli trained to carry out patrols, remove snares, collect data and report poaching incidents to aid enforcement operations.

Project Stampede proved a roaring success within the first year of its establishment. Active snare encounters saw 89% decline compared to the previous year. At one time, three patrol teams recorded more than 100 active snares in Belum-Temengor.

In the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex where WWF-Malaysia is working with the State government to patrol the forest, there has been an overall 90% decline in active snares with zero snares in 2022. The threat of poachers, however, is far from over. Constant patrolling helps to deter poaching activities.

Since 2016, Maybank has partnered with WWF-Malaysia to help conserve Malayan tigers in the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex. We’re paying tribute to our brave rangers, the guardians of our forests, who are the unsung heroes in our collective efforts to protect our tigers. Together, let’s create a loud #RoarForTheFuture! Please subscribe for updates and donate at wwf.org.my/tiger to help save our tigers. Thank you for standing with us as #KitaJagaTiger #Maybank #wwfmy
