Sometimes When We Post Request Help With Rescues O..

Sometimes when we post request help with rescues or other matters, we tend to get long and irrelevant comments. However, regardless of how irrelevant they are, we believe the onus is on us to reply given that we are indebted to all of you. Herewith the replies to some of the queries:

1. Other animals highlighted by rescuers – accept them into Shelter first for safety before looking for adopters.

2. What about those left to die because no rescuers came? What about those rescuers willing to save but not accepted by Shelter, left there pending adopters?

3. I feel both sides should go back to the drawing board and work out a more structured cooperation to assure the donors.

4. It is hoped that there will be more rescue teams in the future, because only then can there be enough manpower to help dogs and cats.

5. It is good if you can list out the stumbling blocks that prevent cooperation between shelter and rescuers that “not going to work or happen”. With better understanding, maybe followers may have practical solutions for them.

6. does MDDB has a rescue squad car? Asking because I’ve seen one with MIAR Rescue Squad logo painted on it.

To accept a dog rescued off the streets directly into the shelter is literally sentencing your shelter dogs as well as the rescues, to death.

Recently we sent a batch of puppies to a shelter because no one came forward to foster – all puppies died of parvovirus. This is common in unvaccinated puppies.

Sometimes, if the street dogs rescued are already infected with parvovirus and distemper – your entire shelter will be literally put through hell.

That is why the most suitable place for these rescues to be fostered in people’s homes in isolation. Dogs are pack animals – to bring in new dogs may also result in them being killed by the old timers.

Assimilating new comers into packs takes a lot of time and cannot be done overnight.

MDDB is a community rescue organisation and our aim is to get as many people as possible to help with neutering, fostering and feeding street dogs.

Everyone is responsible for the welfare of these unfortunate dogs including you.

MDDB is one of the very very few animal welfare organisations whish is run by a wholly voluntary team.

Most other organisations are run by people who are full time there and pay themselves salaries from the donations.

Therefore, we welcome you to become MDDB volunteers just like us.

MDDB helps independent rescuers sometimes but we do not have plans to seek out every independent and hold discussions with them.

Here are the reasons why we cannot do that:

a) We have jobs and besides handling our careers, managing our homes and families – we run a sanctuary, a half-way-home as well as manage daily vet runs.

b) Our priority is our rescued dogs and not what independent rescuers do or do not do. Rescuing is their choice – it is not our call to take them under our wings and give ourselves additional headache.

As stated, this is done as a voluntary basis. When you come across an SOS seeking help to rescue, you can go and pick the animals and help with admission into veterinary clinics.

There is no such thing as a rescue squad. Rescue squads do not exist.

The stumbling block is that there are many people who just talk but are not willing to get their hands dirty.

It is easy for them to suggest for others to do this and that but they themselves would not lift a finger.

MDDB was formed because a group of individuals wanted to walk their talk.

MDDB does not believe in being flashy and sees no purpose in having a rescue squad with the words painted on our vehicles. We have also never purchased a vehicle with donated money.

Both our vehicles are old cars that were donated to us. All the money you give us goes towards ensuring that our dogs live in comfort.

The money is used to hire sufficient workers to scrub and keep the place clean, cut the grass, wash the towels and sheets our dogs get to sleep on daily, pay for electricity and water bill as our dogs sleep under fans and are bathed twice a month.

To do all these we have to also pay our workers.

MDDB is also definitely the poorest NGO because we encourage direct payment to clinics and vendors and only seek financial assistance when we need funds to pay our workers and utilities.

Most of the time what we receive is insufficient and we fork cash out of our own pockets.

We also ask for used items as we do not want to use your money to buy new things as we feel that the money is best spent on our dogs’ comfort.

And even if we have a car with some words splashed across it, you are not going to see us jump into it and rush off to a faraway place in the wee hours of the morning.

MDDB members are in our late 50s reaching 60 as well as in our early 50 and late 40s. We have no energy left.

AND most importantly, not every dog or cat on the streets must be rescued.

So next time, send us a PM or a WhatsApp with your queries as well as suggestions and not hijack thread and posts requesting rescue.

You are welcome to post your comments here as this thread is specifically for this topic of discussion.

LASTLY, if you want to volunteer with MDDB please WhatsApp Brenda at 0122316963.

Cheers and peace out.

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better is a canine welfare programme initiated by non-profit organisation Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII).

MDDB's main activities revolve around rescuing dogs from the local council pounds as well as off the streets. Once they have been rescued, the dogs are vaccinated and neutered before being put up for adoption.
