When Echellia Was Looking For A Home, Her Adoption..

When Echellia was looking for a home, her adoption profile read, “To be the best version of me, I need you.” Now that she’s found that home, everything about her says, “I’ve become the best version of me since I found you.”❤

Echellia’s story begins in 2016 when she gave birth to six puppies at a hotel construction site. Sadly, Echellia and her pups weren’t welcome there, and people wanted them gone.

Luckily, someone alerted us and we were able to bring the family to our shelter for safety. (All of her babies found their forever homes shortly after, except for Elophy who hasn’t been so lucky and is still here at our shelter. You can meet her here: https://www.soidog.org/adopt/elophy-281).

After almost five years at the shelter, Echellia (now named Chellie) found her forever home in Canada last year, and we are thrilled to share this lovely update from her family with you:

“It has been a year since we adopted Echellia “now Chellie” from Soi Dog. She is so very sweet and we love her very much.

She is doing very well and has enjoyed all her adventures over the past year. We walk every day with her and short walks in the afternoon and evening. On her second trip to the cottage when she saw the open water, ducks and boats and waves – she just stood on the rocks looking at it in amazement. She was especially surprised to see me going out in a kayak on the water and then coming back. She isn’t afraid of the water but isn’t too interested in getting into it. Maybe on a hot day but we’ll let her decide.

If she walks on the beach and the waves are splashing up against the rocks, she is cautious of that. All very new for her. But she seems to really like being at our cottage and settles right in.

She knows her name now and some words and phrases. A bilingual dog! She’s a smartie! She understands “sit”, “down”, “wait”, “no”, “good girl”, “go see”, and even “wipe your feet” after getting in the door, she’ll turn in a circle on the rug before going up the stairs.

We have taught her that it’s ok to jump on the couch so she does this on her own now and is very comfortable. She has three beds in the house plus “her” couch lol. She has learned to jump into the car by herself with a bit of a run for it! This is so great as it was quite difficult at first and we had to help her understand it was ok and not scary and place her feet on the seat and lift her bum.

Chellie has found her voice! She barks sometimes after months of silence. A friend came to the house with her Great Dane and stood a distance away at the carport – Chellie barked and barked. We were both really surprised. She has vocalized and whimpered to communicate what she wants or how she feels and barked here and there once or twice over the past 11 months but this was a full-out bark. Then this evening she spotted the stray cat again and I went out to investigate and left her in the enclosure. She had to bark again to let me know she wanted to come! So this is all new and fun. She is enjoying letting us know her thoughts!

She’s a lovely girl and so sweetly affectionate in her own way. Her cha cha dancing, her touching us and kissing our legs and feet and hands. Sometimes she’ll get close to our faces and give us a kiss.❤ It’s the sweetest thing. Heartwarming.

We were gone for a few days to see family and left her with our dog sitter. Chellie was there with a lovely Bernese Mountain dog “Tim” who she enjoyed walks with. When we got back to pick her up she was over the moon to see us and showed her love so sweetly and jumped and touched us and kissed us. Oh my goodness – a very sweet moment. I think she likes us 😊”
