Dear Ms Chan,
I am a cat lover. I feed many stray cat but one has got my heart. I have a stray cat that I really love to death. Her name is blackey. She was my neighbours cat. When he moved out, he left his cat. Blackey was staring and waiting at the door and windows waiting for her owner for months. I felt so sorry for her, and I started to feed her food and after a few months she started to come to me for food. Last December she delivered 2 kittens (1 died, 1 survive). And she was undergone a surgery because another unborn kitten was died in the womb.
Recently, he has just been diagnosed with sporotricosis on her nose (no other part on her body). I went to jabatan kesihatan here in kedah (no private vet her) and he confirmed it and advised to put the cat to sleep (Euthanasia). I feel so sorry for her, she is well-behaved and such a good cat. I just cant do that without trying other alternative. She deserve a second chance. It stresses me out and keep crying about her, I feel sorry for her and this matter give tremendous impact on my daily lives. I did some research and reading and finally last week I bought sporanox. But I have problems:
1. The treatment is too costly and I cant afford to continue. I feel such a failure that I cant give the best for her.
2. Under medication it is advisable to kurung her in the cage. But I cant do that due to space and the kitten is in the house too. I have to separate them for their own good. But she doesnt understand my decision (even though I understand she misses her kitten dearly). I cant let the kitten outside, worrying male cats will eat the kitten or the danger of cars too. She makes noises and disturb the neighbours.
3. She is outside now and it is not good for her recovery. I suppose to keep her indoor and separate from other stray cats but I cant do that.
4. I have a sensitive skin and bad eczema and as we know sporo is contagious and my doctor advises me not to get contact directly.
5. I cant commit my time and energy during her recovery time and it stresses me out. I really want to give the best to her but yet I cant do that. I cant just move on by looking at her wound and do nothing.
I cant just keep crying and do nothing. Please help me. Can you take care of her during her recovery? I cant afford to keep her next to me now. She deserves a second chance and be with someone who is better than me. I have never found such a good cat other than her. I want the best for her. Is there any cat welfare that can adopt her? Please help me. She needs her treatment so soon. I cant move on my daily lives thinking about her especially I see her everyday outside and do nothing that give her sporanox from time to time without proper care. Please help. I dont want to put her to sleep.

In my discussion with Sha, here’s how we shall help Blackey (photo below) and her:

1. Since there is no vet agreeable to treat Blackey in Kedah or Perlis (Sha has tried at the private vet as well as government ones), Sha will source for help to transfer Blackey down to the Klang Valley for treatment. We strongly recommend a vet in Puchong who has had success in treating sporo cats. I’ve contacted the vet to ask if he would agree to treat Blackey.

2. I’ve asked Sha to get a friend to take responsibility for Blackey while she is undergoing treatment here since Sha works in Kedah. If anyone is willing to take responsibility, please write to Sha and offer your help. Sha has indicated she will take Blackey back to Kedah after recovery if Blackey cannot be rehomed.

3. Blackey’s kittens are already on solid food, and Sha will take care of them. She has separated them from Blackey already and they are fine.

4. We have pledged and promised sponsorship up to our maximum of RM500 and have urged Sha to apply to other funds for additional help as sporo cases are expensive. I will also personally speak to the other funds to seek help for Sha.

Please help in whatever constructive ways you can think of.

UPDATES at 1.40pm – I could not get the Puchong vet as his clinic is closed. Initially Sha says she wants to bring Blackey down tomorrow, so I had to source for a vet to take in Blackey. And I know not every vet would be willing to take in a sporo case. Made a few calls, and heavens bless our USJ vet who said he would be willing to treat Blackey for a few weeks provided Blackey’s case is not too bad. But after a few minutes, we found out that the Puchong vet will be open on Monday. And Sha says she doesn’t mind waiting until Saturday to bring Blackey down since she is already administering the Itraconozole on Blackey. Actually, our vet advised that boarding isn’t necessary. Only the medication is. So, anyway, the plan now is Saturday, for Blackey to come down here.

UPDATES at 7.14pm – Photo of Blackie.

Have advised Sha that sporotrichosis is zoonotic and can spread to humans. I’ve told Sha to use gloves when handling Blackey.
