WWF-Malaysia together with the Sabah Wildlife Department (5R Hidupan Liar) are set to organise a series of workshops for pet stores in various districts in Sabah in the coming months, in an ongoing effort to raise awareness on the necessity for wildlife protection in Sabah.
This follows the recent workshop in March organised in Kota Kinabalu where pet store owners from Kota Kinabalu attended and gained insights on the existing laws to do with wildlife and wildlife trade. This is a continuation from the efforts in 2019 where a similar workshop was organised for transportation agencies, freight forwarding and courier services.
The workshops also serve as a platform to caution pet stores on the ill effects that illegal wildlife trade has on the protection of wildlife.
WWF-Malaysia and the Sabah Wildlife Department hope that these workshops will be beneficial to businesses in the pet trade as they will be better informed on the various procedures to do with permit applications, specifically when it comes to wildlife trade.
“This will then bolster our overall efforts in curbing illegal wildlife trade in Sabah and ensure the widespread protection of our wildlife, which are essential to maintaining the biodiversity in our State,” said Sabah Wildlife Department’s Director, Mr. Augustine Tuuga.
