INHUMANE TO MAKE USE OF DOGS TO CREATE RIDICULOUS SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT.
People humanize dogs and don’t understand their psychology as pack animals – Cesar Millan
A video was posted in a dog group today and in it you see a pregnant dog being put through an Indian baby shower ritual.
Indian women go through this ceremony during the 8th month of their maiden pregnancies.
This is a practice whereby the pregnancy is celebrated and the woman is pampered.
It is also the customary practice to well-wishers and family to put on bangles for the mother to be.
It is a wonderful and happy ceremony for the mothers to be – that is provided they are humans.
Unfortunately, it is not meant for animals because such an act is a blatant act of humanising dogs.
But this has become a trend in India for the sake of content, media coverage as well as the money it brings with the hits these videos receive.
The video I saw in the doggy group today was from a site which pays for interesting content and the main motivation behind that video could be cold hard cash at the expense of the poor animal.
It is the first among the links given below.
We love our dogs and cats but we must understand that they are animals and not human beings.
We must not assume that our dogs feel and emote like us. Their feelings and emotions are very very different from that of humans.
But all of us are guilty of dressing up our dogs and giving them fancy dog treats – me included – but the line must end there.
Having a human ceremony for a dog is an extreme act of humanisation which only distresses the animal and you can see this from the body language.
The ears are turned backwards, there is no eye contact and there is flicking of the tongue as well as excessive panting.
The dogs are also being held down most of the time probably to prevent it from bolting.
The dogs appear to be nervous.
What is the purpose of agitating and stressing a dog simply because you want to have a fun activity and social media content? It is cruel isn’t it?
Let this be a trend in India and I hope Malaysians will not emulate it.
It was indeed shocking that many who had watched the videos interpreted it as a loving gesture as opposed to animal abuse for the sake of social media content.
Sometimes dogs that are agitated attack and that is when the family that humanised them in the first place will say it is an aggressive brute and dump it.
We have received such cases as well and found the dogs to be sweet natured animals and not anything like what they owners are described them to be – a dog that had suddenly turned aggressive and attacked.
Dogs only tolerate abuse to a certain level before they break.
When we humanise dogs, we tend to believe their needs are just like our needs and this is so very wrong.
As far as dogs are concerned, their only need is sufficient food and a place to stay and romp with their pack and they certainly don’t want to be terrorised with human ceremonies and practices.
Ever wondered why dogs in open concept shelters like MDDB appear to be happier than our molly-coodled and pampered pet dog?
There is so much literature on this – please search and read. I have included some video links to show you that this baby shower thingy is becoming a big thing in India.
Let’s not fall into the same trap and torture our dogs in the guise of love.
