Finding The Perfect Dog To Match A Family Takes A ..

Finding the perfect dog to match a family takes a lot of behind the scenes work. 💪

In the case of Nicola and her family, we were tasked with finding a dog that had to tick many more boxes than normal.

Back in 2018, we were looking for a street dog who was suitable for a multi-cat household as well as a dog who would be a good fit for the potential adopter Nicola’s complex special needs daughter, Rebecca.

Even though Nicola was an experienced dog owner with years of caring for dogs, it seemed an impossible task at the time to find a dog who can adapt to all possible situations. But, when Nicola volunteered at Soi Dog back in 2018, she met Tortawan (or Torti or Totty as she is fondly called by all) and it looked like we may have found the perfect candidate for the family. After lengthy chats with Nicola and many initial assessments and a home visit by our UK adoption support team, a decision was finally made.

Tortawan left Soi Dog’s shelter, a few months later to the UK and we all waited with bated breath to see how the former street dog would adjust to a family of 6 cats and special needs teenager.🤞

Nicola carried out strict introduction protocols to make sure that Tortawan met the cats in a systematic manner and Tortawan soon proved that she was the real deal. She instantly knew that the best way to get by is to let the feline family members know that she understood the hierarchy of the household. She was more than happy to let the cats think they had all the power.😎

A few weeks after Tortawan’s arrival Nicola shared this update with us:

“I was worried about my shiest cat and how long it would be before he accepted a canine in our home. I should not have been. These two quickly became best friends. It really was the best thing that could have happened for my shy boy. Totty adores many things! She loves sleeping in the human bed with my special needs child, my 6 cats and meeting other dogs at the park.

She has surpassed all expectations in how well she has adapted to a new country, climate, complex special needs children and cats.”

Very soon, it seemed impossible to remember what life was like before Tortawan joined them and it seemed as if she was always part of the family. Not only did Tortawan get along well with the permanent residents of the household, but she proved to be quite the guardian to the foster cats that even to this day continue to come through their door from the local cat rescue (Yorkshire Cat Rescue).

More than anything, what is unbelievably heartwarming to see is Tortawan being an amazing source of support to the family as they go through very hard days when Rebecca requires a lot of support and care. Nicola says, ‘…If it wasn’t for the animals I don’t know how we would get through.’

#Furrytailendings like this is what makes everything worth it and we are grateful to every adopter who made the right choice to adopt and give a rescue dog a chance of a lifetime and in return find happiness for life. 🧡
