Did you know that smallholders or farmers are key to creating a sustainable palm oil industry? Smallholders are usually family farms of less than 50 acres, with the farm being the primary source of income. In 2016, smallholders held 40% of oil palm plantations in Malaysia. This undoubtedly has had an impact on the environment, as smallholders often lack the knowledge and resources to adhere to sustainability requirements in the production of palm oil. Therefore, it is important that smallholders are guided and adequately assisted with the means to produce palm oil with an emphasis on sustainability. WWF-Malaysia will continue to work with smallholders to guide them in improving their practices towards sustainability and to improve efficiency and productivity.
