Kumquat The Kitty (from A First-Time Rescuer, Sharon Anne)

One of my greatest rewards comes from helping and nurturing first-time rescuers. There is so much potential and possibilities when you “teach a man to fish instead of giving him a fish”.

Here’s updates from Sharon Anne, my old school chum who picked up an abandoned kitten last week. Sharon had never handled a kitten before, but as I’ve always said, the first time can be good. Why, it can even be great!

Well, it certainly is, for Sharon Anne:

Hi Kah Yein,

Took the kitty to the vet last saturday and he said it was healthy, clean and doing very well.
As I mentioned, it’s really feisty, clawing and biting anything that comes in contact (usually my hand and fingers). Can feel the gums and its bite is strong. The claws are small but sharp and can be quite painful trying to hold it for feeds and cleanups.
It’s now drinking about 15ccs every feed. Crawls all over when let out of its box and is fast too!
Vet estimated it was 11 days last saturday so 2 weeks old now.
Very difficult to take its picture cos it moves so fast and won’t keep still. Tries to wiggle out from my grip always. Anyways I did manage a few photos which I am attaching here.
Whilst I may not see us keeping it for the long term, fostering kumquat (named thus for the kumquat basket it lived in for the first few days) has been quite a joy. It’s actually quite therapeutic after a stressful day at work to come home to a bit of play and feed time.

Sharon has a fulltime job, but we can all do our best despite our less than ideal circumstances.

Have advised Sharon to seek a vet’s advice on deworming and also to toilet-train Kumquat.

I’ve also suggested that she may wish to consider adopting Kumquat since it’s generally easier to look after a cat than a dog. Cats do not need walks, they groom themselves (hence, no need baths) and they are easier to litter-box train. Cats are generally more independent than dogs, too.
