How Deep Can A Sea Turtle Dive?. Most Turtles Are ..

How deep can a sea turtle dive?

Most turtles are capable in diving up to 290 m (960 ft). However, the leatherback turtle can dive over 1,000 m (4,000 ft) and that is equivalent to the length of 10 football fields!

Did you know that the maximum depth ever recorded for a sea turtle dive was by a leatherback that dove 1,280 m (4,200 ft)?

This is possible due to their deep-diving adaptations.

The adaptations of a leatherback turtle includes collapsible lungs (to compress themselves to cope with pressure changes while diving), a flexible shell (absorbs nitrogen, reducing problems arising from decompression during deep dives and resurfacing), pulmonary sphincter (to shunt blood flow away from the collapsed lungs and back to the body during dives) and also slowed heart rate (to conserve energy and oxygen stores).

Now you know!
