As we celebrated #GlobalTigerDay recently, we need to reflect if we have done enough to protect our Malayan tigers? Despite our efforts to protect our national treasure, they are still on the brink of extinction.
Protecting tigers means that we protect the forests and biodiversity that support them. In turn, we also protect the natural resources that people and industries rely on. However, poaching and widespread habitat loss and fragmentation due to economic growth and development are still causing the tiger’s rapid decline.
To stamp out poaching and snaring that cause the extinction of our Malayan tigers, WWF-Malaysia is supported by partners including P&G and MYCAT. Some of the initiatives taken, together with the Orang Asli community, are patrolling and installing camera traps in the forests.
Large mammals like tigers need connected forests to roam and find food. Forest fragmentation isolates tigers and wildlife, causing inbreeding health decline. Fragmentation is also one of the causes of human-wildlife conflict. As such, the collaboration also addresses habitat loss and forest fragmentation due to conversion for agriculture, through forest restoration and advocacy.
Protecting the Malayan tiger requires the involvement of all stakeholders and an integrated approach which addresses the key issues that are driving their decline. We must work together now, before it is too late for these majestic creatures.
