Animal Right Awareness Week

The third week of June is Animals Rights Awareness Week, and we’d like to take this opportunity to show you how YOUR support helps Soi Dog fight for the rights of street animals and change societal attitudes towards them.

In the following video, our Community Relations Manager Khun Bern discusses Soi Dog’s work to combat animal cruelty and the importance of tackling the root causes of it by educating and empowering communities.

Soi Dog’s ultimate mission is “to improve the welfare of dogs and cats in Asia, resulting in better lives for both the animal and human communities, to create a society without homeless animals, and to ultimately end animal cruelty”.

As part of this mission, we are working to reduce the overpopulation of street dogs and cats through a large-scale programme of sterilisation and vaccination across the country. Sterilisation truly is the most humane and effective way of preventing unwanted puppies and kittens from being born into short lives of suffering on the streets, while vaccination is vital in stemming the spread of deadly infectious diseases. We are also working to implement a different approach to the treatment of stray and domestic animals by reaching out to schoolchildren and communities through our humane education and community outreach programmes.

As well as building relationships and trust with local communities, we have also worked hard over the years to support and collaborate with the Thai authorities. In 2014, this resulted in the introduction of Thailand’s very first animal welfare law: the Prevention of Animal Cruelty and Provision of Animal Welfare Act. A landmark achievement, the law covers a number of welfare issues, including abuse, abandonment, neglect and the slaughter, trade and consumption of dogs and cats for their meat.

Last year, Soi Dog saw the first known conviction for abandonment in particular under the Act. The case concerned a pitbull by the name of Johnny Cash who was dumped by his owner in our car park in the pouring rain. Armed with clear CCTV evidence, we reported the case to the police who were able to locate and charge Johnny’s ex-owner. You can read more here: www.soidog.org/content/urgent-appeal-johnny

We continue to work closely with the relevant authorities and collaborate with communities to strengthen the Act and bring the perpetrators of intentional animal cruelty to justice.

The journey has never been easy. It’s a long, tough road with obstacles along the way, but with your support, we promise to never stop fighting for these voiceless souls. Thank you for being part of Soi Dog’s mission and helping to effect real change.
