THE WOMAN YOU WON’T SOON FORGET…..

Naida Kaltak is an angel with bruised and frostbit wings. Every single day, she’s called to one or more remote Bosnian villages to rescue dogs and cats who are barely hanging on. While most pass them by, a few will call her because they know she won’t say “no’. But the truth is, Naida desperately needs us to wrap our arms around her right now. She’s alone with the immense costs of care for those who are taking refuge with her. And she has until Friday to get several remaining dogs out of a pound where they are set for death, and here, death will not come gently.

We asked Naida to diary a few highlights of her rescues in a single week, and here’s what she said:

DAY 1: Mum and 5 sick pups in weekend place on one remote mountain. I couldn’t leave them there. They are still fighting for their lives, twice a day liquids and medicines. The vet comes to them which is a blessing on the narrow and steep Bosnian village roads.

DAY 2: Very injured kittens found by children in bushes , one heavily beaten and second with eye injury

DAY 3: A small pup is lying next to the busy road, without moving. After vet check she was diagnosed parvo, still fighting.

DAY 4: 8 cats and kittens were dropped on my gate from which 4 adult cats are heavily sick with upper respiratory inflammation. Have caught and sterilized 58 cats in the last three weeks.

DAY 5: I got a call for a skinny mum and pups who live in an abandoned shed in outskirts of one remote village without food or anyone who cares. Hours were needed to find them.

DAY 6: Call for mum and 8 babies, living in an old dog house on abandoned property in a deserted village. They were found by trespassers who stopped to find water.

DAY 7: Call from my vet about 3 pups, about 3.5 months old, and condemned to euthanasia because the breeder is closing. They were treated as rats on that farm, only thing they ever got was food. No nice words, no cuddling, no love.

We’re trying to raise $3,330 to help Naida this month and hope to do the same again in February. It’s a tall order, but so many of you have been a part of the Harmony Fund’s work for years now and you have helped accomplish so many incredible feats!
