The Islands Off The Coast Of Semporna, Sabah, Are ..

The islands off the coast of Semporna, Sabah, are home to various indigenous communities including the Bajau and Suluk ethnic groups. Aggang or sianglag is a traditional staple food for these communities. Made from shredded coconut and cassava, it can be eaten as a substitute for rice. This food can be kept for 2 to 3 days and goes well with grilled fish, tayyum (sea urchin), dollen (shells) and other types of seafood.

.

For coastal and island communities, healthy oceans are critical for food security, livelihoods and wellbeing. Just like forest communities, these communities have a deep spiritual and cultural connection with the sea. As marine resources deplete, oceans warm and sea levels rise, many coastal communities find themselves on the frontlines of the fight against climate change, and are forced to adapt their lifestyles and customs in the face of these ever growing threats.
