The Best Birthday Present Anyone Could Ever Ask Fo..

The best birthday present anyone could ever ask for! 🎁🐶

“We decided to make a three-month Asia trip in 2019. We wanted to volunteer at Soi Dog as well. Since I turned 50 years old during our trip, my husband Rien surprised me with the best birthday gift ever: I could choose a dog from Soi Dog. There are a lot of dogs, so I asked a few people if they knew a dog who was a senior, had a terrible past and was shy but very lovely. Almost everybody mentioned Sienna, an older dog meat trade dog covered in scars on her nose, a bit shy, but full of love for every dog and human. I loved her immediately.

Between the day I chose Sienna at Soi Dog and her flight to Amsterdam was about 100 days. I will never forget when the Thai [flight volunteer] arrived with Sienna – named Senna from that day – in a crate at Schiphol. The first days she was trembling with fear. Our 14-year-old other stray dog, Torak, was extremely happy to have Senna in our house. Senna was in her own world but loved being near humans. I started to give her daily massages with meditation music. She loved it and, after a month, most of the trembling fear was gone.

She has lived with us for nine months now and she is doing amazing. In 2018, I started the Soi Dog Education Office in the Netherlands. When I visit schools I take Senna with me to show students a dog meat trade survivor with a #furrytailending: retiring in heaven on Earth with us after a life in hell.

So, if you don’t know what you should ask for for your birthday, consider adopting a dog meat trade rescue or sponsoring one. Senna brings joy to our lives every day, especially during this Covid-19 crisis.”

Sienna was rescued from the dog meat trade and was adopted in 2019 by the Classens. The dog meat trade is now non-existent in Thailand, and the outlawing of the consumption of dog and cat meat is included in the Prevention of Cruelty and Animal Welfare Provision Act 2014, an act that Soi Dog worked with the Thai government to draft.
