Gerald’s Yowling
Tweet |
Gerald’s yowling was pretty bad yesterday.
It is very, very stressful.
I spoke with my vet-friend about it and her views are practical and realistic. She agrees that not all cats are happy living indoors and the yowling is not only stressful to humans, but also to our other cats. That is a factor I have to consider too and I’m aware of it. The bottom line is, we do the best we can, and that’s all we can do.
I am aware that there will always be different points of view on this, and I hope those who follow my stories understand that I am already doing my very best for our cats. It is definitely not the best, but it is my best.
We were on the verge of letting Gerald free yesterday evening because the yowling had been going on all day and it was so very loud. By evening, I was just totally and completely drained out. But I decided to try one last ditch effort with him, so I went into the room and told him pointblank that if he keeps yowling and is not happy, I will let him live outdoors like before, but if he wants to live indoors, then he has to stop yowling. Then I left the room.
Believe it or not, he totally stopped and we had some peace for a few hours until he started yowling again at night and I had to go in and settle him down again.
He has migrated from the top of the cage to the platforms, but he prefers the red basket below.
This is his new place now.
We would just have to cope with the yowling one day at a time and see how it goes. If Gerald is too unhappy living indoors, I won’t force him. As my vet-friend says, I have to think of our other cats too. The yowling can be very disturbing to them as well, especially when it is so very, very loud and persistent.
Without Gerald’s yowling, our house is quiet and peaceful.
Meanwhile, Creamy came to the park today.
I told him to go home and he did.
In his outdoor life, Gerald usually travels on the neighbour’s roof or on the ledge and goes to the back. We have no back alley (these are very old houses where it’s back-to-back). He also loves going over to the next-door neighbour’s house’s porch and just sits there.
He’s still indoors now. Let’s hope there is less yowling today. I also have to clean the pantry many times a day because Gerald uses all three litter boxes to mark and he’s not exactly the neatest cat. But all this is fine, as long as he doesn’t yowl.
