ENHANCED REPORTING FORM UP!
ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) has been handling an average of 250 cases a year involving sale of prohibited wildlife or cruelty to wild animals. We work closely to complement the efforts of enforcement agencies. Over the past years, we noticed that more people care about the well-being of animals, and the way they are treated or managed, eventually coming forward to report crimes against them. In addition to reports on illegal wildlife trade, we have observed reports on cruel treatment of wildlife in our midst. We strongly believe that everyone should be empowered to understand what information is needed for further investigation, in particular with increasing reports on online crimes. We have now enhanced the reporting system to collect information to not only investigate when leads are available, but to observe trends. Our data-driven approach has resulted in addressing challenges that animals (and people) face in our #CityInNature. Data is crucial to strategise our efforts with limited resources – whether it is to bring attention to trends, to focus educational efforts to fill a gap or to plan a project on a particular widespread issue.
