Do we believe in second chances? βYes, we do!β, says Priya, our senior investigation officer. While our crime unit regularly files cases with enforcement agencies for action, we also assess case information and take effort to mediate and raise awareness, striving for a win-win outcome for the animals and individuals involved.
Attending to a recent case involving an individual keeping a wild scops owl in Sengkang area, she shares:
βMy priorities were safety for all and wellbeing of the animal. I was hoping for a smooth mediation and an opportunity to educate on the welfare concerns of bringing home a young owl and keeping the owl in captivity. At ACRES, we believe that awareness and education is key to helping both animals and people. Even though I was shocked that things took a drastic turn when the individual walked away from me, what really saddened me was that the individual who claimed to care for this owl, intentionally wrapped the poor owl in a trash bag and tossed the bag over into a construction site. In the end, we managed to rescue the owl with the help of members of the public and Singapore Police Force.
Preliminary vet checks sadly revealed clipped wings and tail feathers. A case has been filed with Nparks for investigation. Nila [Moon in Tamil], the owl is now under rehabilitation at ACRES, hoping for release into the wild. We expect that it will take several weeks before Nila is ready for a second chance in the wild. Please, will you support our efforts to help animals in Singapore? https://www.giving.sg/donate/campaign/gala-2024
