This case is a near-fatal reminder of the importance of spaying.

Our mobile clinic team in Phattalung province recently found this poor dog struggling on the streets. Someone had given her a contraceptive injection to prevent pregnancy. Although well-meaning, they were ill-educated on the effects these injections can have.

In this case, it caused pyometra – a life-threatening infection of the uterus that causes it to fill with bacteria and pus.

Her uterus had swollen to a staggering 8.5 kilograms, and the team rushed her into surgery. Fortunately, she’s recovering well. She was 22kg prior to the procedure and is now a healthy 13.5kg.

❗️ ANY unspayed female dog can develop pyometra, even without such contraceptives, highlighting the critical importance of this surgery for our pets’ overall health.
