The female terrapin that emerged last night was a returnee! 💪🏻
She was first microchipped in 2012, after depositing 31 eggs. Then she returned in 2015 to lay 13 eggs. In 2024, she returned to lay 20 eggs (so far, there could be more).
The microchips that we implant in the terrapins allow us to determine their nesting history, i.e. nesting year, frequency and productivity. In the long-term (like in this conservation project that has been running since 2012), it allows us to estimate the size of the population too. Knowledge of their population size will then enable us to develop conservation strategies to protect and conserve the species.
