Where To Begin With 2020? A Unique Year, Mostly Fo..

Where to begin with 2020? A unique year, mostly for the wrong reasons but also for some pretty amazing ones! #SoiDog20Years 🧡

Thailand enforced Covid lockdowns within the country and closed its international borders in April. This meant infection numbers remained low throughout the year, but the effect it had on stray animals was of great concern.

With no tourists to support the economy that relied so heavily on them, people struggled. In turn, the stray animals struggled. We also witnessed many cases of pet abandonment due to the economic impact of Covid. This only added to the ever-increasing number of animals who required assistance.

We began by distributing over 11 tons of food to stray animals and to our network of stray animal feeders, ensuring no animal went hungry while the first two-week lockdown was in force. Then, we were able to acquire another parcel of neighbouring land to help increase the size of the sanctuary from 6 to 8 acres, and built a further nine dog enclosures to cope with the inevitable influx of new animals.

We needed to increase the size of our cattery, too, as the number of cats needing shelter also increased. The opening of the new cat hospital the year before had allowed for alterations to the existing cattery and the creation of two new cat suites.

By midway through the year, though, the number of cats under the care of Soi Dog had risen by an alarming 35% and the number of dogs had risen by 15% with no end to the situation in sight…
