This week in the #SoiDog20Years timeline, we look back at 2014 – one of the most remarkable years in Soi Dog history 🧡
The four-year fight against the illegal dog meat trade in Thailand came to a successful conclusion. The illegal gangs were disbanded, thousands of dogs were rescued and the large-scale trade was consigned to the history books.
Now the work of relocating and rehoming the rescued dogs began.
The location and size of Soi Dog’s shelter in southern Thailand made it logistically impossible to bring them all directly from the northern region, so Soi Dog reached out for support to build shelters on an existing wooded livestock facility in Buriram province, some 400 kilometres northeast of Bangkok and within closer proximity to the rescue locations.
Buriram means ‘City of Happiness’ in Thai, and nobody could have been happier at that moment to have ended the trade and offer new hope to the thousands of dogs rescued from its clutches.
Thanks to the overwhelming response from Soi Dog supporters, shelters were constructed to provide a haven for them, and a programme of rehabilitation and eventual rehoming began.
