Reasons why members of the public who don’t like stay dogs or cats report to local councils and what we as stray lovers can do to minimise or curb the problem. First and foremost, we need to understand that strays and humans coexist together forming this balance ecosystem. Removing them by any means drastically will only result in consequences which may be worse. Secondly, we posses something called compassion, let us all solve the stray problems humanely.
1. Ransacking rubbish bins and cause a mess.
Remedy – manage the household waste well and put them into a tight lid bin.
2. Defecation and urination – This problem seems more eminent for stray cats than dogs especially in apartments blocks and condominiums. The culprits might not always be the stray cats but pet cats ! Irresponsible cat owners let their cats out defecating and urinating at neighbours’ and the strays get the blame.
Remedy – to all house cat owners , please keep your cats indoors at all times. You wouldn’t want the strays to be caught by local councils and die, would you ? To all feeders, what you can do is prepare litter boxes at designated areas for the stray cat to discard their wastes and clean them regularly.
Preferably using cat sand but if it’s too costly, you may substitute it with shredded old newspaper.
3. Debris left behind after feeding strays. To all feeders, we commemorate and applaud you for your compassion and kindness towards the strays but please be a responsible feeder. Paper or plastic plates and bowls used to put food and water for strays create an unsightly site for the people who stay around the areas. You really can’t blame them for asking feeders not to feed strays !
Remedy – Identify a spot which is out of the sight of passers-by and always clean up after feeding.
4. Commotions caused by male cats or dogs fighting in mating season.
Remedy – neuter them, males and females. Why is it important to neuter the males too? Beside the reason mentioned above, it is also to prevent injuries resulting from a fight. If they go untreated, flies may lay eggs that hatch into maggots and if it goes unattended, it will be a slow and painful death for the dog or cat. And thirdly, to prevent sexual transmitted disease like TVT etc.
5. Stray dogs chase after passers-by. Main reason why they do that because dogs and cats are territorial animals, they are merely defending their territories.
Remedy – if you’re being chased after or you know people who are, don’t retaliate by throwing things at them or by using tools to hurt them. Keep calm and feed them instead, every time you pass by the area, give them something to eat, there’s a saying, a dog will not bite the hand that feeds it. In this way, the dogs will recognise you as their feeder, not only the dogs will not chase after you, the dogs may even protect you and they get to eat. It’s a win win situation.
Please feel free to add on to the list. Thank you.
